The Tithes

The Tithes

As I mentioned in the post I wrote, Overcoming Spiritual Immaturity I was a babe in Christ for about 20 years, I doubt back then if I was even born-again. It was not until I was born-again in 2018 that I began to tithe faithfully, 10% NO MATTER WHAT MY FINANCES LOOKED LIKE and I give/gave 2-10% to the poor! While the latter was a personal decision, the former was a matter of obedience and faith.

What does tithing having to do with obedience and faith? Let’s look and see...
In Luke 18:18 Jesus responds to a rich ruler. The rich ruler asked Jesus what he had to do to enter the kingdom of heaven. Please note, the covenant of grace did not exist until Jesus fulfilled the law of Moses, after his resurrection.
  • A certain ruler asked him, Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Why do you call me good? Jesus answered. No one is good—except God alone. You know the commandments, You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother. All these I have kept since I was a boy, he said. When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
The rich ruler was not obedient to God. When I start growing spiritually, God spoke to me about tithing. I made a heart decision to tithe. I can actually recall the day I decided to give up everything, including my money to follow Jesus. I wasn’t concerned how I would be able to tithe, I just knew I WANTED to. Jesus tells us in Matthew 16:25, that anyone who wants to save their life will lose it. I lost my worldly life, the moment that I made a heart decision to tithe, AS IT WAS THE LAST thing I was holding on to, that was preventing me from spiritually growing. Other believers may tithe and be holding on to something else, and thus that other thing could stop their spiritual development. For me, it happen to be the tithes.

Tithing takes faith because you will go from trusting yourself to provide for yourself, to trusting God to provide for you. I believe tithing is what helped me develop spiritually, I had to depend on God like I never had to before. I believe that all believers are called to tithe. What stops them? Fear...(the opposite of faith). What do they fear? They fear not being able to make ends meet or not being able to enjoy their lifestyle.

I can tell you that God has blessed me with provision(money, savings on my monthly rent, etc) more then I actually tithed. In Luke 18:29, Jesus says anyone who gave up their comfort for the Kingdom of God will not fail to receive many times as much in THIS AGE, and the age to come, eternal life.

In Luke 19:1-10 Jesus responds to the faith of Zacchaeus, a chief tax collectors.
  • Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
The chief tax collector was obedient to God. You may say, well I haven’t cheated anybody out of anything! Thanks for bringing that up...but before you read the scripture below, please understand Jesus redeemed us from EVERY curse of the law; Old Testament and New Testament. Plus as stated in 2 Corinthians 9:17 God loves a cheerful giver, he will not force you to do anything. By reading this, what you should understand is how important tithing is to God.

“I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed. Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord Almighty. “But you ask, ‘How are we to return?’“Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me.

“But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’

“In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the Lord Almighty. “Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the Lord Almighty.
