Is baptism and being born again the same thing?
Before we can chat about baptism, we have to chat about being born again in order to prevent confusion. It is important to mention that baptism and being born again are different. However, in order to be born again & enter in the Kingdom of God you have to be baptized by water and Spirit. The proof text can be found in John 3:1-8 "Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God."

In a lot of my podcast and videos I mentioned that I was a church goer for many years but I was not born again. While, I was baptized with water physically at different points in my life. I had never been baptized with Holy Spirit's fire until May 19, 2018. When I was baptized with water + fire in 2018, I was born again. I know that I was born again because I saw my new birth in the spirit [I literally saw Jesus in the spirit] and felt it physically in the natural [it felt like I was electrocuted]. I also knew that I was born again because before being born again, I had a change in my heart. I made up in my heart that I was tired of living a life of sin; this led to my baptism, not only in the water but also with fire/the Spirit.

Is there a difference between baptism of water and baptism of the Spirit? Yes, you can think of baptism of water as part I (Holy Spirit is upon us) and baptism of fire as part II (powered by the Holy Spirit because he is inside us). Let's see what the bible says!
  • In Luke 4:1 We read that after Jesus was baptized with water, he was full of the Holy Spirit. In Luke 4:14 we read that after Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit, then he was powered by the Holy Spirit which allowed him to do the miracles, and all he does in the gospels. However, Jesus was powered only after overcoming the temptation of the devil and test in the wilderness. Note the devil tempted Jesus with worldliness (money, fame, etc) to get Jesus to deny his authority and identity as the son of God. After Jesus overcame using the word of God, Jesus was powered by the Holy Spirit. This is why in Matthew 4 after Jesus is powered he teaches his disciples how to be full first, and then powered in the sermon on the mount.
  • In Matthew 3:11 John the Baptist distinguishes the difference between the baptism of water and the baptism of the Holy Spirit. “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire
  • In John 3:5 Jesus tells us "“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God."
  • Titus 3:5 "he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,"
  • Acts 2:38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” [Note: the gift (singular) of the Holy Spirit is not the Holy Spirit. The gift (singular) of the Holy Spirit is his baptism [fire+water], in which Peter and the other disciples experienced 34 verses after mentioning it in Acts 2:1-4.]
  • Acts 1:5 For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
  • 1 Peter 3:20-22  to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
What is the baptism of water?
From what we read above from 7 bulleted scriptures, the baptism of water is for repentance, and for the forgiveness of sins according to Acts 2:38. In other words, the baptism of water is for those who are sinners and want to repent from their sins and acknowledge they need a savior [Jesus Christ] to forgive them of their sins. The first baptism, happened in Genesis 6, according to 1 Peter 3:20. God, the father cleansed (baptized) the earth with water to cleanse the earth from it's sin. From scripture we know that sin can pollute the earth, in addition to polluting human bodies. In Genesis 4:10 Jesus, tells Cain "Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground." The earth was defiled from the bloodshed. Listen to the Genesis chapters 1-4 bible study teaching by clicking here.
  • Acts 2:38 “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
  • Acts 10:47 “Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?”
Why is the baptism of water needed?
  • Forgiveness of sins [Proof text: Acts 1:5]
  • To be able to understand the word of God [Proof text: Luke 7:29&30]
What is the baptism of the Spirit?
From what we read above, the baptism of fire comes after the baptism of water. The baptism of fire are for those who are now saints [their sins have been forgiven, and Jesus is their Lord]. You cannot rule over sin & temptation without being baptized with the Holy Spirit/Fire.
  • Psalm 104:4 & Hebrews 1:7 He makes his messengers winds, his ministers a flaming fire.
  • Acts 2:3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
  • Luke 24:49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
From reading John 3:22 we know the disciples were baptized with water, but according to Luke 24:49 they had not yet being baptized with the Holy Spirit because the Holy Spirit was not available for everyone in the new testament until Jesus resurrected [unless chosen by God like John the Baptist as mentioned in Luke 1:15,16. Some also had the Holy Spirit come upon them like Simeon in Luke 2:25, 26 but upon and being in are different], which is why the disciples are baptized with the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 and not when Jesus was with them in the gospels.

Why is the baptism of Spirit needed?
  • To be born again & enter the Kingdom of God = John 3:1-8 . "Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. ..."
  • Power = Luke 24:49. If you have no power, you cannot use the authority Jesus Christ has given those who believe in him to use his name. You get power when you believe. In Acts 19:11-20, the seven sons of Sceva tried to use authority in the name of Jesus with no power. Read the post titled "In the Power of the Spirit."
  • Glory Zechariah 2:5 "And I will be to her a wall of fire all around, declares the Lord, and I will be the glory in her midst.”

How to know if you are born again [baptized with water + Spirit]:
  • You will be able to speak in tongues as the Holy Spirit gives you the utterance according Acts 2:4 . These tongues sound like a language that is from some region on earth. For instance, if you speak english only, with these tongues you may speak chinese.[Proof text: Acts 2:5-13]. Note these tongues are for those who have been baptized with fire. There is a difference between speaking in tongues and the gift of tongues. The gift of tongues is a gift that allows you to speak to God in a heavenly language. Read the post titled "In the Power of the Spirit," for greater details. Correction added July 2, 2019 - these tongues when spoken can sound like a different language on earth or a heavenly language, however when hearers hear these tongues they may hear it in their native language. For greater details read the blog post titled Gifts.
  • You will be powered by the Holy Spirit according to Mark 16:17-19 & Acts 2:42-44 "And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.” After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God."
  • You will have a boldness to preach the word of God according to Acts 2:14-47. Preaching is not a office in the five-fold ministry according to Ephesians 4:9-14. This means that you don't have to be called by God to be an apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, or teacher in order to preach. When you have been baptized by the Holy Spirit you will have a boldness like Peter did in Acts 2:14-47 We know by reading the gospels [specifically Matthew 26:33-35,Mark 14:29-31,John 13:37,John 13:38] that Peter denied Jesus three times before he was baptized by the Holy Spirit. After he was baptized by the Holy Spirit he was bold, he preached to the same people that he denied Jesus in front of... approx. 45 days before.
  • Suffering for Jesus Christ [note, there is a different between suffering for yourself and suffering for the name of Jesus]. 2 Timothy 3:12 reads "Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted." In Luke 12:49-53 Jesus says “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed! Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
How do you get baptized with Holy Spirit?
  • Be baptized with water for the forgiveness of your sins
  • Be filled/full of the word of God. In order to be filled/full of the Holy Spirit you have to read the word of God with the Holy Spirit and allow the Holy Spirit to sanctify you. You cannot have the world and God. You cannot want evil and want God. You cannot hate and love. You cannot love money and love God. Jesus had to choose, I had to choose, you will have to choose! The world or Jesus. =)
  • Five-fold leader can lay their hands on you according to Acts 19:6.
Please note: the baptism I am speaking about are both spiritual. Do not let anyone burn your physical body with fire to baptize you.
