Communication Series 5 of 5: What are the hindrances to communication with God?
There are 7 things that can hinder our communication with God.
1. Inconsiderate disrespectful husbands
  • 1 Peter 3:7 Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers
2. Unrepentant sins
  • 2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
3. Unforgiveness
  • Matthew 6:14-15 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
4. Fear in the circumstances/doubt in God/unbelief
  • James 1:5-7 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.
  • John 14:12-14 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
5. Disobedience
  • Proverbs 1:23-34 Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you,I will make known to you my teachings. But since you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand, since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke, I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock when calamity overtakes you when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you. “Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me, since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the Lord.  Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”
6. Carnality
  • Romans 8:5-6 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.  The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.
  • John 4:24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.
7. Wrong motives
  • James 4:1-3 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
There are 4 reasons why God doesn't respond to us right away when we ask him a question:

1. We do not have a free/pure heart.
  • Our heart is our communication point to God. If our soul is not calm and quiet, then we cannot connect with God. Advice: Turn off all electronic devices before you pray, get in a quiet space, and sing one praise and worship song before you pray to ask him question.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Matthew 5:8

2. We are not praying from our heart, rather we are praying from our soul.
  • Our soul is our thoughts, emotions and feelings. If we have a free heart, but yet pray from our soul, then God will not answer the questions that we have in our soul, but rather what's in our heart.
  • For example: Your soul may want to know when will this suffering end? Jesus may say trust me. He is getting to the heart/root issue not the stem/fruit issue. Advice: Ask the Holy Spirit to help you pray from your heart!
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. Romans 8:26-27

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. Psalm 62:5

3. He has already responded
  • We already received the answer but choose not to accept it or believe it. I often find that when this is the case, that I hear silence from the Lord.
and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade. The Jews who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. John 10:23-26

4. We do not know him and he doesn't know us
  • Some Christians go to God only when they need something instead of building a relationship with him by reading the word of God daily, and praying to him daily with all kinds of prayer. God wants a relationship with us. If you only go to him when you need him then you most likely will not get a response quickly.
