Gifts Series 2 of 3: The Five-Fold

Gifts 1 of 3 Series: Detailed Overview of all 3 Gifts
Gifts 2 of 3 Series: The five-fold
Gifts 3 of 3 Series: Manifestation of Visions and Dreams

#1 Gifts that are people [the five-fold] for the church - called/anointed!
These gifts are callings from Jesus Christ to a born-again believer. Jesus Christ was all the five-fold ministry gifts; He was the apostle (Hebrews 3:1), the prophet (Mark 6:4, John 4:4), he was the evangelist (Luke 4:18-19), he was the shepherd (John 10:11-18), and he was the teacher (John 3:2). When Jesus Christ ascended he gave the church him, as a gift, split into 5. Those who are the gift, are the gift from birth. We know this because when we read Galatians 1:15-17 and Jeremiah 1:5 both Apostle and Prophet were called into this gift from birth. Not all apostles, prophets, evangelist, shepherds, and teachers will have the same level of anointing, nor will they function the same way. However, they should all bear good fruit that last according to Jesus in John 15:1-15. Paul in Ephesians 4:8-15  said "This is why it says: “When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.” What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe. So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ."

Before we go over each gift of the five-fold ministry. I want to point out that it is not possible spiritually for a man to self-call and self-anoint themselves into one of these offices. If God has called you and anointed you to be one of these five gifts, it is possible to be promoted [proof text is Acts 13:1-3, and Acts 14:1-6]. You'll notice in my most recent videos on YouTube that I stopped calling myself a pastor at ANJWC because Jesus corrected me. I am not a pastor, rather that is the office I am standing in which I've been called and anointed to be in. I have also been called and anointed to teach and as of yesterday, I have been called and anointed to prophesy in the office of the prophet. However, if I was not called from birth to shepherd then I would not be able to be promoted to other offices within the five-fold. Promotions comes when someone who is in the five-fold walks in love, desires to grow spiritually, and have faith which is an action. You will be tested [2 Corinthians 12:7-10]!

Note: The order for promotion can is shown in 1 Corinthians 12:28. You will notice that shepherds and evangelist are not mentioned. It's because according to the Bible the shepherd doesn't teach or preach, rather they overlook the souls of the Lord's sheep. They can be, however, called and anointed to teach. Remember an evangelist doesn't teach, he/she preaches and a preacher only speaks about the Good News according to the Bible. After the shepherd and evangelist are called and anointed to teach, then they can be promoted via calling and anointing to the office of the prophet, and then afterwards called and anointed to the office of apostle. However, if they do not desire more they will remain in their calling and anointing and that's fine, as long as they are doing what they are called and anointed to do.

If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. 1 Corinthians 12:26-31

The Apostle: Teaches, preaches, work wonders, and perform mighty deeds
  • 2 Corinthians 12:12 Truly the signs of an apostle were accomplished among you with all perseverance, in signs and wonders and mighty deeds.
  • Acts 5:12-16 Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon's Portico. None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem. And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed.
  • Mark 3:14 And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach
  • Acts 2:42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
  • 1 Corinthians 9:27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.
The Prophet: God speaks to him/her in dreams, visions, they are given parables and they also council:
  • Acts 13:1-3 Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a member of the court of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off. Not by Acts 14:1-6 Barnabas and Saul had moved into another office within the five-fold ministry. "At Iconium Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue. There they spoke so effectively that a great number of Jews and Greeks believed. But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers. So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders.  The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles. There was a plot afoot among both Gentiles and Jews, together with their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them. But they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country"
  • Hosea 12:10 I spoke to the prophets; it was I who multiplied visions, and through the prophets gave parables.
  •  Matthew 13:13 This is why I speak to them in parables
  • Ezekiel 13:9 My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and who give lying divinations. They shall not be in the council of my people, nor be enrolled in the register of the house of Israel, nor shall they enter the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord God.
  • Jeremiah 14:14 And the Lord said to me: “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds.
  • Number 12:6 And he said, “Hear my words: If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord make myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream
  • John 1:48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
The Evangelist: Preach to everyone about Jesus, while healing and delivering
  • Luke 4:18-19 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
  • 2 Timothy 4:5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
  • Acts 21:8-9 On the next day we departed and came to Caesarea, and we entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him. He had four unmarried daughters, who prophesied.
The Shepherd (pastor): Oversee the soul of the sheep. The soul of a person is their mind, what they think or feel. Just because one is called to be a Shepherd doesn't mean they are automatically called to teach or preach on a pulpit.
  • 1 Peter 2:25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls
  • Matthew 9:36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
  • Isaiah 40:11 He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.
  • Proverbs 27:23 Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds,
  • Ezekiel 37:24 “My servant David shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shepherd. They shall walk in my rules and be careful to obey my statutes.
  • Luke 2:8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
  • 1 Peter 5:2 Shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly;
The Teacher: Gives understanding about the word of God, to the body of Christ.
  • Psalm 119:99 I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation.
  • James 3:1 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.
  • Galatians 6:6 One who is taught the word must share all good things with the one who teaches.
There is a difference between someone who is called to be an Apostle and or Prophet from birth and someone who is in the five-fold ministry and are promoted to be an Apostle. If there is a promotion, the anointing will be there. When the anointing is not there, they would have to stand in the office they were called to be in from birth. For those who are called to be Apostles and Prophets from birth, remember you are a gift to the church. I  recommend only using what has been given to you for the purpose the bible tells us. In Matthew 7:21-23 Jesus says “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’"

Micah 3:11 Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets tell fortunes for money.Yet they look for the Lord’s support and say, “Is not the Lord among us?
