What is greed? Covetousness?
  • Greed: intense and selfish desire for something, especially wealth, power, or food.
  • Covetousness: greedy, acquisitive, grasping, avaricious mean having or showing a strong desire for especially material possessions. covetous implies inordinate desire often for another's possessions.

Purpose of Church
  • When we understand the purpose of attending church, then I believe it will help us walk in that purpose. Ephesians 4:11-16 lets us know the purpose of attending church is to be equipped by the five-fold leadership for service (service is defined as the action of helping or doing work for someone), as well as becoming mature in our faith, so that we can attain the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
  • In Ephesians 4:11-16 Paul tells the church in Ephesus that Jesus Christ split his leadership gifts in five, and gave the church the Apostle, the Prophet, the Evangelist, the Shepherd ( Pastor), and the Teacher to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
  • Since God loves us so so so much, and when we repent he will always forgive us and remove the spiritual consequences of our sin which is death, we often think that he will not allow the natural consequences of our sin to remain, in order to prune us, teach us, and grow us. Spiritual maturity is for our benefit and remaining spiritually immature when God expects us to gradually mature is a sin, and will only hurt us in the long-run both individually and collectively, instead of help us.   • Luke 12:15 And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”
  • 2 Peter 2:3 By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.
  • Proverbs 20:21 An inheritance gained hastily at the beginning. Will not be blessed at the end.
The cure for greed/covetousness:
Jesus Christ is the only cure to sin. If you've sinned, you should repent first, and then ask God for mercy and grace second. Afterwards, follow these concessions:
    • Learn to be content: Philippians 4:11-13 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
    • Be aware of greed: Luke 12:15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
    • Put to death any greed that is in you: Colossians 3:5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.
    • Do not love the world: 1 John 2:15-17 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
    • Ask God for what you want with good motives: James 4:2-8 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble." Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
    • Purity of heart: Matthew 5:8, Matthew 5:28 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
    • Guarding our heart in the Lord: Psalm 119:9 How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word.
