Interpretation of Visions and Dreams Series 3 of 5 - Open Visions

To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds. - Daniel 1:17

Visions are all about what we see. When God is speaking to us either audibly or in our hearts about something in reality, we can have open or closed visions as he is speaking. However, the spoken words are not happening in the closed/open vision itself. Thus, we don't hear speech via natural words in open and closed visions. However, in trance visions God can reveal himself via speech, and in dreams we can hear natural words. Proof text: Numbers 12:6

The main difference between a dream and vision is that dreams occur when we are sleep, and visions occur when we are up. In dreams God the father uses one person to represent himself, and uses another person to represent the devil (the same people). In trances, Jesus reveals himself either by sight, smell, hearing, voice, touch and or presence. In visions, we are in the Spirit. There are 3 types of visions:
  • Open visions = We can see into the spiritual realm with our eyes wide open. Unlike trance, closed visions, and dreams, one doesn't have to be a born-again believer to have an open vision from Jesus Christ, continue watching for the proof text!
  • Trance visions = All of our senses in including our sight are influenced by the spiritual realm (hearing, smell, taste, and touch). The Greek word for trance is existhmi and it means to put (stand) out of wits, i.e. astound, or (reflexively) become astounded, insane:--amaze, be (make) astonished, be beside self (selves), bewitch, wonder. Proof text: Acts 10, Acts 22
  • Closed visions = We can see into the spiritual realm with our eyes shut closed.
Before I continue I want to mention that when people see angles and demons (spirits) on earth, those people are not necessarily having a vision (they can be, but it doesn't mean that they are). However, it does mean that those people are seeing angles and demons with their spiritual eyes. The reason why it's not a vision or dream, is because in open visions and dreams we are seeing things that are not reality in the current time and dimension we are in at that moment. Demons and angels can be where we are, thus not all sightings of demons and angels are visions.
  • Reality; not vision -> For example: Luke 1:26-38 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.
  • Vision; not reality -> For example: Acts 10:1-3 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment. He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, “Cornelius!”
Either Open Vision or Trance Vision:
Luke 4:1-13
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
  • The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”
  • The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. If you worship me, it will all be yours.”Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’” [My notes: How is it that Jesus Christ, who is full of the Holy Spirit and led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness, was also led by the devil in the wilderness? Proof text: Galatians 5]
  • The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.
Note: This took place before Jesus's resurrection. At this point in time, satan had demonic authority over mankind through sin and generational curses and he also had demonic power. After Jesus's resurrection, satan only has demonic power, and illegitimate authority. Proof text: Matthew 28
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.”Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

"(Formerly in Israel, if someone went to inquire of God, they would say, “Come, let us go to the seer,” because the prophet of today used to be called a seer.)" - 1 Samuel 9:9

Why do we have open visions?
    Reason #1: Revelation For Saints
    Proof text: Matthew 3:16

Matthew 3:13-17 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, [My notes: open vision] and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. [My notes: real life] And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
Luke 3:21-22 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying[My notes: In Luke's account, it says that Jesus was praying], heaven was opened and [My notes: open vision] the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. [My notes: real life] And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
    My example:
Reason #2: Revelation For Sinners For Salvation & Appointment & Witnessing
    Proof text: Acts 26:12-18

Acts 26:12-18 On one of these journeys I was going to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests. About noon, King Agrippa, as I was on the road, [My notes: Open vision] I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, blazing around me and my companions. We all fell to the ground, and [My notes: Audible voice] I heard a voice saying to me in Aramaic,‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’ “Then I asked, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ “ ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,’ the Lord replied. ‘Now get up and stand on your feet. I have appeared to you to appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen and will see of me. I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’

    My example:
    • May 19, 2018 I saw Jesus Christ blow life into me
    Reason #3: Divine Direction
    Proof text: Acts 9:10-13

Acts 9:10-13 In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. [My notes: vision start] The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!” “Yes, Lord,” he answered. [My notes: real life] The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.” “Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem.

    My example:
    • February 19, 2020  Flowerbed next to large tree, flowers long, no stems, and alive (moving from left to right).
    Reason #4: Prophetic
    John 1:48
Job 1:47-49 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.” Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.”

Jeremiah 1:11-15 The word of the Lord came to me: “What do you see, Jeremiah?” “I see the branch of an almond tree,” I replied. The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.” The word of the Lord came to me again: “What do you see?”“I see a pot that is boiling,” I answered. “It is tilting toward us from the north.” The Lord said to me, “From the north disaster will be poured out on all who live in the land. I am about to summon all the peoples of the northern kingdoms,” declares the Lord.“Their kings will come and set up their thrones in the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem; they will come against all her surrounding walls
and against all the towns of Judah.
    • My example: July 2019 I saw someone being healed
Which viewpoint do we vision (open) in?
Viewpoint is defined as the position from which something or someone is observed.

Viewpoint #1: We are in it ourselves and we are not seeing ourselves from an outer dimension. In other words when we are visioning, we do not have a dimensional view point (like being in a movie, you cannot see who's watching you).
    • Open Vision proof text: Zechariah 1
    • Word of God first, in reality -> Verses 1-6: In the eighth month of the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berekiah, the son of Iddo: “The Lord was very angry with your ancestors. Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Return to me,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will return to you,’ says the Lord Almighty. Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the earlier prophets proclaimed: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Turn from your evil ways and your evil practices.’ But they would not listen or pay attention to me, declares the Lord. Where are your ancestors now? And the prophets, do they live forever? But did not my words and my decrees, which I commanded my servants the prophets, overtake your ancestors? “Then they repented and said, ‘The Lord Almighty has done to us what our ways and practices deserve, just as he determined to do.’” [My notes: Word of the Lord came first, and then Zechariah had the visions. When God is speaking to us either audibly or in our hearts about something, in reality, we can have open or closed visions as he is speaking. However, the spoken words are not happening in the closed/open vision. ]
    • Vision second -> Verses 7-8 On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berekiah, the son of Iddo. 8 During the night I had a vision, and there before me was a man mounted on a red horse. He was standing among the myrtle trees in a ravine. Behind him were red, brown and white horses.
    • Reality -> Verses 9-17 I asked, “What are these, my lord?” The angel who was talking with me answered, “I will show you what they are.” 10 Then the man standing among the myrtle trees explained, “They are the ones the Lord has sent to go throughout the earth.”  And they reported to the angel of the Lord who was standing among the myrtle trees, “We have gone throughout the earth and found the whole world at rest and in peace.” Then the angel of the Lord said, “Lord Almighty, how long will you withhold mercy from Jerusalem and from the towns of Judah, which you have been angry with these seventy years?”  So the Lord spoke kind and comforting words to the angel who talked with me. Then the angel who was speaking to me said, “Proclaim this word: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I am very jealous for Jerusalem and Zion, and I am very angry with the nations that feel secure. I was only a little angry, but they went too far with the punishment.’ “Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘I will return to Jerusalem with mercy, and there my house will be rebuilt. And the measuring line will be stretched out over Jerusalem,’ declares the Lord Almighty. “Proclaim further: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘My towns will again overflow with prosperity, and the Lord will again comfort Zion and choose Jerusalem.’”
    • Vision -> Verse 18 Then I looked up, and there before me were four horns.
    • Real life -> Verses 19-21 I asked the angel who was speaking to me, “What are these?” He answered me, “These are the horns that scattered Judah, Israel and Jerusalem.” Then the Lord showed me four craftsmen. I asked, “What are these coming to do?” He answered, “These are the horns that scattered Judah so that no one could raise their head, but the craftsmen have come to terrify them and throw down these horns of the nations who lifted up their horns against the land of Judah to scatter its people.”
Viewpoint #2: We will see ourselves, and we will be watching us as it is happening (like watching a movie, in which we are the character). In other words, we see ourselves in it  and as we are having the vision we are watching ourselves from an outer dimension.

How do we receive visions from God as born-again believers?
As I mentioned in the teaching The 4 Ways We Are Led By God, God speaks to us and leads us in our dreams. In Daniel 2:29-30 Daniel was speaking to King Nebuchadnezzar about the King's dreams and visions. Daniel told king Nebuchadnezzar "As Your Majesty was lying there, your mind turned to things to come, and the revealer of mysteries (God) showed you what is going to happen. As for me, this mystery has been revealed to me, not because I have greater wisdom than anyone else alive, but so that Your Majesty may know the interpretation and that you may understand what went through your mind." From reading Daniel 2, we know that dreams happen in our mind (soul). Since, our visions happen in our soul (thoughts, feelings, emotions), the more our flesh is influenced by the world, the more it has an impact on the kind of dreams that we have (Godly dreams vs demonic dreams), and the more our flesh is influenced by the word, the more it has an impact on having Godly dreams.

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." - Matthew 6:33

How do we interpret open visions?
Note: In Daniel 1:17 it is written "To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds." In Daniel 2:31-35, Daniel interpreted King Nebuchadnezzar's dream via a vision given to him by God. When we read Daniel 7, we will notice that God doesn't give him a vision to interpret his vision. Why? Visions, show us the things to come about us and about others in the present and in the future.

#1. Everything God the father uses as representations (parables) would be obvious to us.
      • Proof text: Amos 7:7-9  [My notes: open vision] "This is what he showed me: The Lord was standing by a wall that had been built true to plumb, with a plumb line in his hand. [My notes: reality] And the Lord asked me, “What do you see, Amos?” “A plumb line,” I replied. Then the Lord said, “Look, I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will spare them no longer. “The high places of Isaac will be destroyed and the sanctuaries of Israel will be ruined; with my sword I will rise against the house of Jeroboam.”
#2. If we had an open vision, and we are a sinner (not born-again), we should repent from all of our sins, ask Jesus Christ for mercy and grace to remove the natural consequences of your sins, and then ask him to send you to the ministry he wants you to go to.
#3. If we had an open vision, and we are a saint (born-again), we should take it as is.
#4. If we had a open vision that is a prophecy about the future, there's nothing for you to do (unless the Lord wants you to pray about it) because the vision is showing us the things to come.
#5. If we had a open vision and it's divine direction, understand that God is wanting you to do something or moving you into a new season. Recommended teaching: How do we transition out of trials and tribulations?
How do we know that it's a open vision from God:
        • We are not sleeping, when it happens.
        • If speech is involved in the vision (doesn't have to be), we will not hear words via speech (from a voice), but we will hear words in our spirit (our heart), because we are up, not sleeping.
        • We see it with our spiritual eyes.
        • We do not have to be a born-again believer to have a vision from Jesus Christ (Proof text: Acts 26:12-18)
        • Visions from God will never evoke demonic fear, or sinful passions and or temptations  James 1:13-14 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.
